We’ll learn the technique you can use EVERY time you write to unleash your creativity, write compelling content, and NEVER get writer’s block again!
Whether you’ve been blogging for a while, or you just started your blog, you need to write, and you need to deliver great content to build and maintain a quality blog. Good content is not good enough anymore. Your content must be great to stand out.
What now?
So here you are, and now you find yourself sitting in front of your computer trying to figure out what to write. Sound familiar? Maybe this is your first blog post, or maybe you have written a few and now you have “writers block”. With these tips, you can write a great blog post at any time and never have a block again.
Let’s dive right in and learn how to write a great blog post
A great blog post consists of great content. Great content is content that your audience finds useful or beneficial in some way. But there is more to it… you also need to deliver that content in a way that connects to your audience and in a way that your audience finds interesting. Any topic can be interesting based on the way you present it.
Decide what to write about
Choose a topic that either solves a problem or is useful to your audience in some other way. Remember this rule: Do not write for the sake of writing or just to be blogging
You should always have something valuable to share. Remember that people are taking the time to read what you have to say. If you waste their time, they will not come back. Respect them by helping them. A great post contains useful information.
If you have chosen a good niche for you, then deciding what to write about should be (for the most part), easy. Eventually, your audience will ask questions making it even easier. Until then, here are some ideas to help you:
- Think about what you would tell a “newbie” in your niche. How to get started, materials needed, things they need to learn. Don’t assume everyone knows what you know. Share your knowledge, share your special way of doing things.
- Just like above, think about what you would discuss with experienced people in your niche.
- Don’t worry if other people are already teaching what you want to teach. There are people who will relate to your unique style of teaching.
- Review products, services, or even places. If there are certain tools that you use and find helpful, these would be great topics for blogging. Your audience will appreciate it. Just be sure to review one product or service at a time. Product reviews are also a great way to earn income with your blog through affiliate marketing. Always be genuine with your reviews.
If you have an idea for a post, write it down when you think of it and keep a log of “blog post ideas” for future posts.
Prepare to write
Now that you chose a topic, think about it for a moment and make a list of the key points. I usually make a quick list of bullet points and then put them in the proper order. This list serves as a reminder to cover each point. A great post covers important points in the proper order.
Don’t try to cover every detail, you will lose their attention. But do make sure you cover everything needed to provide the help they seek. You can always follow up with another blog post with more detail.
Maintain your writing style
We all have our own style. Find yours, and don’t try to copy someone else’s. If you’ve been blogging for a while, you probably know what your writing style is, even if you never really gave that any thought. If you are a beginner, then it is important to find your writing style now.
Your style is your natural way of communicating, and it is easier to write when it is natural to you. It’s also better for your audience because they connect with you by relating to your style. A great post connects with the reader.
Here’s an example: Let’s say there are 5 great blogs in the same niche as yours. Each of those blogs will retain an audience that can relate best to that blog owner. So while there may be some overlap, an audience will generally spend more time on a blog they can relate to. Find yourself, find your audience.
If you do not know your writing style, check out this short post. It will help you find your style in just a couple of minutes.
Start writing
If you’ve ever wondered how to begin writing, and you just don’t know what to do first, know that you are not alone.
That is normal, but we are going to bust through that right now! Here’s a trick that I use that works like a charm:
Write like you are speaking, in whatever style is natural for you. Make-believe you are having a conversation with a friend. Just the two of you, face to face.
That’s the secret to BUST THROUGH writer’s block. Just try it… it’s easier than you think.
There’s no special opening, just start talking and begin typing. I do this all the time… I’m doing it right now. Yes, I speak out loud as I am typing.
Earlier in this post, I mentioned the term “writers block”. I dislike that term because it should never exist if you follow this one important tip. It’s worth repeating again to make sure you got it…
Write like you are speaking! Just make believe you are having a conversation with a friend… face to face!
Just to clarify, I am suggesting that you DO NOT take the time to find the perfect words or the perfect opening. Just talk to the (imagined) person in front of you. Or, if it works better for you, pretend you are having that conversation over the phone. There is no time to find words, whatever comes out of your mouth is what you start typing.
Don’t try to make it perfect… this is where your writing style will be revealed. This is how you will connect with your readers.
And don’t worry at this stage if your writing does not convey the message properly, you can always go back and edit it (after you finish writing the post).
There is nothing wrong with editing, and I actually suggest that you go back and proofread and edit accordingly. Just don’t try to rewrite everything or to change the tone.
Another great benefit of writing this way is that you write much faster than you otherwise would. Your blogging becomes fun, fast, and valuable.
Your first post
If this is your first blog post, worry not! Just take the advice above and begin writing. It’s okay to let people know it’s your first post, but only if that is what you wish to do. Talk to them. Tell them why you are here.
It’s ok to share your vulnerabilities, but still, be sure to provide value in the post. How can I help you?
Additional writing tips
Keep these additional tips in mind:
- Do not try to figure out the whole thing before you start writing. Nothing kills creativity faster than trying to force yourself. Just let it flow.
- Remember, you are talking to people – not preparing a speech.
- Just write your thoughts out as you are “speaking” them out loud.
- Get right to the point. I don’t want to contradict myself here, so let me clarify this for you. Although I am suggesting that you write as if you are speaking to someone, you don’t have all day for a conversation.
- Don’t worry if you ramble on a bit… you can always go back and edit it when you proofread.
- Don’t worry about grammar. My 10th grade English teacher would be disturbed at that comment, but this is a blog, not a book report. Prim and proper writing does not connect unless your audience and your niche relates specifically to that type of dialogue. I am not suggesting that you use sloppy grammar. Just be sure to get your point across in a way that connects with your audience. Your use of words and grammar will be similar to the verbal conversations you would have with your audience.
- Use your judgment.
- Have fun.
Editing
Reread your post, and modify anything that needs clarity. Here is where you can pay attention to your editing. Cut stuff out if it is redundant, change words if they are not clear.
Don’t rewrite your content. The whole point is keeping it natural for you.
Final words
This post is intended to help make it easier for you to write great content. There will be a learning curve, and you should know that it won’t be perfect. That’s ok.
The only way you will become proficient is by continuing to write. So get out there and write! Your style and your method will become more distinct and defined as you go.
