There seems to be a lot of people asking what the difference is between an article and a post.
If you want to be a blogger, you probably want to know as well. I’m going to keep this post short and sweet, but I will provide just enough explanation.
Article or Post?
Traditionally, there are differences between blog posts and articles, however, in today’s content-driven climate, these two words are now, for the most part, interchangeable.
This means as a blogger, you do not need to think about the difference. Professional writers, particularly business writers, will argue that point. Particularly because they charge different fees for writing articles vs. writing blog posts. For us, there is no difference.
Got it? No difference!
For those who do want to understand the differences between posts and articles that used to prevail before these two forms began to mesh, here’s what you want to know. Just remember, these differences may no longer be true since the terms are now interchangeable.
- Posts are short, and articles are long (or longer)
- Posts are generally for blogging, and articles are generally for fixed web pages
- Posts are informal, and articles are intended to be more professional
- Grammar is not too important in posts, and more important in articles
- Posts are written with SEO in mind, and articles pay less attention to SEO
- Posts provide opinion, and articles provide facts
I just want to be clear that I do not necessarily agree with these differences between blog posts and articles that I listed above. Plenty of articles contain opinions, plenty of posts are long.
I’m kind of glad that these two terms have overlapped to become one in the same. The tone, length, and content should be based on the intent the writer has for the reader. And any online content should take SEO into consideration. Just be sure to provide value to your readers, and you’ll be fine whether you call it a post or an article.
I hope you like this article… ahem, I mean, post.
