I received an email this morning from WordFence, a security plugin that I use and recommend. There was an intruder attempting access. This should not scare you at all, because you should expect it and prepare for it. It’s no different than preparing your home by putting a lock on your door.
I’m sharing this with you so you take website security seriously. If you have not already done so, check out my post on essential security plugins.
The email below was sent from one of my niche websites. The hack attempt was stopped by the WordFence plugin. I want to point out two things.
First is the importance of having a username that cannot be easily guessed. You can see that the login attempts were using the username “admin”. I never use the username admin, and you shouldn’t either. Unfortunately, admin is commonly used – but now you know better. Also, did you know that “password” is the most commonly used password? Please, don’t ever do that!
The second thing that I wanted to point out is that my security plugin blocked the intruder after 6 login attempts. I set it up that way. I strongly suggest that you limit the login attempts. Hackers use programs to relentlessly pound on your site. These programs attempt all sorts of combinations of passwords that may apply to you and your site, and can run for hours on end attempting to login. Block the hackers and they’ll move on to another site.
What are your security concerns?
